mIRC Options

mIRC Options

The mIRC client contains many options as well as an extensive built in help system. Below I've outlined the Main Options with descriptions for quick reference. See the Advanced Options page for sub options included in mIRC. View the built in mIRC help file for full descriptions of all options. Simply click the option name you wish to know more about from the menu below to view detailed information.

Connect
Connect
The Main Connect option window is your user information. Do Not put your real name in the real name field. You may use any valid looking email address. Choose your desired Nickname and an Alternate Nickname. Selecting invisible mode allows only users in the same channel to see you. Using New Window allows you to connect to multiple networks with your single client.
Servers
Choose the Network and Server you wish to connect to. There are additional options, Add, Edit, Delete and Sort. As Servers are added and removed occasionally you can edit them here.
Options
Select the options here that best suit your needs, connect on program start, reconnect on disconnection... The default port is normally 6667 though you may use other irc ports. Please note the 3 additional tabs, Perform, Retry and Advanced.
Perform is used to set automated tasks on connect such as joining a channel or setting user modes.
Retry is self explanatory. It is recommended you set your connection retries to at least 30 seconds apart.
Advanced allows you to set specified ports for DCC. This is often used in conjunction with firewall and router settings to successfully use DCC.
Local Info
You don't need to set Local Host or IP Address, mIRC will usually fill these in for you on connect. Select Local Host on Connect. Select Server for Lookup method.
Identd
Most IRC servers require your client ident to connect. Select Enable Identd server. Fill in User ID (usually your primary nick). The default port is 113. Select enable only when connecting.
Firewall
This option is rarely used by the average user. If you are behind an external firewall contact your System Administrator for the required information.

The Main IRC option window allows you to set many custom options. Choose to keep channels open on disconnect. Rejoin your channels on connect. Choose what channel messages you wish to see in your active windows. The Event tab allows you to set preferred options for channel events.
